Best Bird Food: Food Varies for Different
Birds
Bird watching is a favorite pastime for many people. They keep us entertained with their many songs. It is fun to watch them
build their nest and start a family. You may see them
fighting over the feeders and chasing others off. But then again
some birds are willing to share the feeders. If you will put up
a few feeders, it will assure you of keeping the birds in or near your yard. Did you know that not all birds eat the same food? That is why we need several kinds of feeders to attract many different
types of birds. But what do we put in the feeders?
There are many types of seed for all your variety of birds. The best bird food is a
good mixture of seeds, bread and insects. This will satisfy most
birds. Many of your feeders are designed for seed. A platform feeder is a good feeder if you wish to offer mealworms,
fruit. Tiny seeds are best put in a tube feeder.
A popular seed is Black Oil Sunflower seed. Many birds will come to the feeder that provides this seed. These seeds have a thinner shell and can be easily opened versus the
stripped sunflower seed. These are tough and hard to
open.
You can use a tubular feeder to feed the finches as it has very tiny hole ports and is
filled with a feed called nyjer. It is fascinating to see all the yellow gold finches come to your
feeder. They look like little canaries. Chickadees, wrens, and woodpeckers love a feeder with peanuts. You might
decide to have a ground feeder for the quail and pheasants. They
like millet, cracked corn and wheat. The best bird food for Robins and bluebirds are insects, fruits or
berries. Hummingbirds will need a special feeder to dispense a liquid. You will need to have a nectar mixture for them. These are very fun birds to watch. It is amazing how fast they can fly. They are very colorful, tiny birds.
Feeding birds is a year round job. They
need the feed in the winter to keep them warm. You need to feed
them in the summer if you want the birds to continue to stay in your yard and vicinity. They are always looking for food and will go and hang out where they can
easily have access to it. Suet cake feeders are a wonderful food to offer birds all year. This food helps to keep them warm in the winter. It is a good food to have in your yard in the summer. I have seen the bluebirds bring their babies to the cake to eat after they
fledged the nest. Woodpeckers are seen carrying it off to their
nest to feed their babies. You can consider making your own cake
by mixing cornmeal with peanut butter. The woodpeckers and
chickadees love this food.
