Suet Bird Feeders
Suet Bird Feeders: The Best Bird Feeder for the Winter Months.
We always talk about feeding birds in the spring and summer but what about those
months when it starts to get cold? We still want to keep feeding those birds that we always love hearing and
seeing even if it is cold outside and snow is on the ground. This is probably the most important time to
provide food for birds because the ground may be frozen making it very difficult to find insects and seeds.
So, to help your feathered friends, the best bird feeders for the winter months are suet bird
feeders.
Suet bird feeders look a lot like cages and are usually made of metal. Inside the cages, you will place a cake of suet. Unlike regular bird seed, this food does not need to be protected from the
elements. Suet is great for the winter because it is high in
both fat and nutrients to help the birds stay warm. However, you
can still use these types of feeders and food in the spring and summer if you wish; however, you run the risk
of the food becoming rancid if temperatures reach over 70 degrees.
There is a large variety of suet bird feeders available for purchase. They can be as simple as a square or a more complex style of a wooden house
with the square cage inside. Some are hung from trees and other
need to be attached to poles. You can also find double feeders
to accommodate more birds at one time. Keep in mind; you do not
have to settle on a simple cage if you do not want to.
Decorative suet bird feeders are available at affordable prices as well.
If you do not wish to feed so-called pesky birds, such as Starlings, consider
purchasing a suet feeder that requires the food to be accessed from the bottom. In addition, squirrels will happily eat the suet, so make sure it is placed
where they cannot reach them or possibly jump onto them.
Suet bird feeders can range from very cheap to quite expensive. You can find the
simplest cage design for around $5 but the price will go up as the decorative aspect increases.
